Make the Best Glazed Ham this Holiday!

Hello again my friends! Today I have for you a special treat! Glazed Ham! This is the only way we way we eat roasted ham in our house. It is so flavorful, juicy and tender, you will be licking your fingers! The best part about this recipe is that there isn’t any difficult to manage ingredients so it is budget and shopper friendly. My version is also easy to make so even the most novice of chefs can achieve deliciousness!

Did you know they have traced cured ham back to the 6th & 5th century B.C.? Ham is cured with salt, either wet or dry and it may or may not be smoked. However it is always a pork leg cut that is processed in some manner. It can also take several months for a ham to cure properly and completely, as many as 24 months for Iberian Ham, for example.

What I love about this glazed ham recipe is the flavor. The orange really comes thru mixed with the sweet smokey subtleness of the bourbon. Apple would make a great substitute! Here are a few recipes that are great sides to this ham recipe:

Swaps & Specs:

  • No special equipment needed for this recipe, just use a disposable roasting pan, if you want.

  • Get the bone in shank side of the ham if you can. The bone imparts more flavor and I have found this cut to be more tender.

  • Don’t want to use alcohol? Try white grape juice or apple juice. Just add more orange juice if you like, really punch up that orange flavor.

  • Leftover ham can be frozen and kept for up to 4 months as long as it is sealed properly.

  • Remember to rest the ham before you carve it.

Equipment

  • 1 large roasting pan

Ingredients

  • 1 6-10 lbs bone in shank side ham NOT SPIRAL CUT
  • 1 cup orange marmalade
  • 1/2 cup dijon mustard whole grain, if you can find it
  • 1/2 cup real maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup bourbon
  • 3 tbsp fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp ground ginger

Instructions

  • Heat oven or roaster to 325°. Mix all the ingredients (besides the ham) in a small bowl. Remove ham from packaging, give a quick rinse, and place cut side down in roasting pan.
  • Score ham in a criss cross pattern all the way around. Brush with about 1/2 cup of the glaze. Cover loosely with foil so it doesn't burn.
  • Bake for about 2-2 1/2 hours or until temp is 125°-135°F. Remove foil. Turn oven temp up to 425° and brush with glaze again. Bake for another 15-20 minutes, glazing ham every 6-7 minutes. Repeat the process about 3 times.
  • Keep an eye on the ham so the sugars in the glaze don"t burn. You are looking for a deep mahogany color. Once cooking is finished, remove to cutting board and tent with foil for 20 minutes before carving.

Notes

  • Get the shank portion of a bone in ham
  • Don’t get a spiral cut, it will dry out way before the process is complete
  • Don’t like bourbon? Leave it out and add a fruit juice instead
